為了完成《前車可鑒》這部巨著，薛華博士花了四十多年的時間，深人研究西方神學、哲學、歷史、社會學、藝術等各學科。<br/> 他從分析古羅馬的敗亡開始，順著歷史的發展，將基督教興起、中世紀時教會變質、啟蒙運動、宗教改革以及現代社會的形成等，這些最關鍵的歷史時代以及形成這些時代的思潮加以客觀分析和評價，并指出了各個世代盛衰的根源。<br/> 薛華博士在書中指出，西方文化衰落的根源，是人僭奪了創造者的位置，人要獨立自主，作宇宙的主宰，因此西方國家已經迷失了方向，以致整個文化體系百病叢生，前景將是一片黑暗。<br/>最后，作者以先知之聲，呼喚當代由背道之罪中歸回，不再身為被造者卻以創造者自居，就得以歸回并且存活。這也是本書英文原名How Should We Then Live？(我們將何以存活？)的涵義。 |
