The son of the king of Northumbria, he was forced into exile when his father's throne was seized. He became a Christian under the monks on the Island of Iona. He returned to claim his kingdom at the Battle of Heavenfield near Hexham. Now a convinced Christian, he determined that his people should be converted and called Aidan from Iona to found a mission on Lindisfarne, which became a powerhouse of evangelism.
